Philadelphia 76ers at San Antonio Spurs -15 Total: 210.5
It’s rare for San Antonio to lose two in a row. They bounced back nicely with a Thursday night win against the visiting Thunder. Kawhi Leonard and LaMarcus Aldridge combined for 61 points in the 108-94 victory.
The Spurs did turn the ball over and blew an 18-point lead late, but still managed to grab the win. The victory gives them a 37-11 mark on the season, which currently has them as the second-seeded team in the Western Conference, behind the league-leading, Golden State Warriors.
Philadelphia has had one of their best seasons in years, but that still hasn’t translated into winning basketball. Don’t get me wrong, the Sixers have a nice future, but they are still some ways away from making the postseason.
They’re coming off an 113-95 loss at Dallas last night, their third in the last four games. The defeat dropped them to 18-30 in the East. They are ranked 13th in the conference and are four games out of a playoff spot.
The Spurs opened as -13.5 favorites in this contest but quickly shifted to -14 after opening. The number then moved to San Antonio -15, which is where it stands currently.
The Sixers are not the team they were last season. They’re improved, but they’re going to be overmatched in this one, and the spread reflects that. San Antonio at home is a rough spot for a back-to-back for any team, and there’s a good chance they are blow out of the building by halftime.
Both teams will score in this one, the total is relatively high, but Philadelphia will likely be without Joel Embiid for the second straight game. He didn’t travel with the team on Wednesday due to a knee contusion and is not likely to suit up. They take a big hit offensively without him on the floor.
Pick: Spurs -15
Golden State Warriors at Los Angeles Clippers +8 Total: 225
In a game that will be broadcasted on TNT nationally, the Warriors head to Los Angeles to take on the Clippers at Staples Center.
After narrowly missing out on a title last season, the Warriors added Kevin Durant and free agency and look poised to at least make their way back to the finals this season. They have the NBA’s best record at 42-7.
Golden State has won four in a row, including a 126-11 victory over the Charlotte Hornets last night. Stephen Curry had one of his best games of the season in the win, hitting 11 three-pointers and scoring 39 points. The game was over after three-quarters.
The Clippers are also coming off a victory last night. They took care of the Suns in Phoenix, winning by a score of 124-114. Blake Griffin had a huge stat line in this third game back from injury, scoring 29 points, grabbing eight boards and dishing out five assists.
L.A. has a chance to be a dangerous team in the playoff once they get Chris Paul back from injury. They’re currently the fourth seed in the West with a 36-16 record.
The Warriors opened as -10 favorites in this game before the odds shifted in favor of the Clippers. Golden State are now -8 favorites across the board.
The Clippers were beaten severely by the Warriors on Jan 28th at Oracle, but in this spot, there are reasons to like their chances of keeping this one close. First, they have a healthier Blake Griffin. Secondly, they’re at home.
The Warriors are not exactly as polished as one would expect for the best team in the NBA. Their second unit is horrible, particularly defensively, and even if the Clippers found themselves down by 25-30 points – they may be able to rally back to single digits during garbage time.
I think they keep the game close all night and possibly even pull an upset.
Pick: Clippers +8
