Orlando Magic at Houston Rockets +11 Total: 224

The Magic will face a tough test tonight as they head to Houston to take on James Harden and the high-scoring Rockets offense.

Orlando is coming off an 113-86 loss to the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday. It’s been a rough run for the Magic lately. They are just 3-7 over their last ten contests and have lost two out of their last three games.

It appears to be another lost season for the Magic. They would need to play at quite the high rate to even be in contention for a playoff spot in the East. Their loss over the weekend dropped them to a 20-33 mark and 13th in the Conference.

The opposite is true for the Rockets. After struggling with mediocrity in a tough Western Conference for several years – they’re having their best season in some years under first-year, head coach, Mike D’Antoni.

Houston is well-rested after last playing Friday, winning 121-117 against the visiting Chicago Bulls. The victory pushed their record to 37-17 in the West. They’re currently the 3rd seed in the Western Conference but are just 3.5 games behind the Spurs for the second spot.

Betting Action

The Rockets opened as -11.5 favorite. Betting action has been heavy on Houston, with over 70 percent of wagers coming in on the home team. So far, the line hasn’t moved much. It’s still –11.5 or -11 at most shops.

Houston has the potential to blow Orlando out of the building in this game, but there are reasons to think the Magic can keep it close. First, they’re not a great team defensively, but they are athletic and young enough run with the Rockets.

I think they will be able to score in this one with both teams getting plenty of rest. It should be within single digits (or close) within the final minutes.

Pick: Magic +11.5

Portland Trail Blazers at Dallas Mavericks +1.5 Total: 205

The Trail Blazers head to Dallas looking to break a losing streak against the Mavericks.

Portland has lost their last two games, including a 99-105 defeat at Oklahoma City on Sunday. The Trail Blazers have a lot to play for the rest of the season. They are just 1.5 games back of the Denver Nuggets, who currently sit in the 8th spot and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

The Mavericks were one of the worst teams in the NBA through the first month or so of the season, but they have turned things around in a big way. They’re also in contention for a playoff spot as their record has climbed to 22-30. In fact, they’re just 1.5 games better than the Blazers and three games out of a playoff spot.

Dallas is coming off a game last night. They lost a critical game at Denver, in blowout fashion, by a score of 110-87. Center, Andrew Bogut, did not play in last night’s game. However, he is questionable to suit up for tonight’s contest.

Betting Action

Dallas opened as a -1.5 favorite. However, the line has shifted towards the Blazers after 60 percent of bets have come in on Portland. The Blazers are now -1.5 across the board.

The market move here makes sense. Portland strikes me as the best overall play on this slate.  They are coming off a day of rest compared to Dallas, who played last night and may still be without Bogut.

Let’s not forget, the Mavericks still have some younger pieces, but they also have a lot of veterans. Portland’s defense is weak, but they can score the rock, and I could see the Mavericks failing to show up tonight, even though this another critical game for their playoff hopes.

Pick: Trail Blazers -1.5
