The Kings head to Staples Center to face the Lakers and hope to get their fourth win in a row as they fight for a Western Conference playoff spot.
Sacramento has been playing excellent basketball as of late. They just finished a three-game home stand where they ran the table. They defeated the Celtics, Hawks, and finally, the Pelicans on Sunday night by a score of 105-99.
The Kings have been up and down since they Rudy Gay for the year, but are now in a position to make a run at the eighth and final seed in the Western Conference. Their 23-32 record is three games behind the Nuggets who currently have the final playoff spot in the conference.
The Lakers started off the year hot, but have played some of the worst basketball in the NBA in the past two months. L.A. is coming off a 122-114 victory on Friday at Milwaukee, but the win is just their second in the previous five games.
Los Angeles would need a miracle run to reach the postseason at this point and many teams to falter ahead of them. They’re currently in second to last place in the West with a 19-39 record.
The game originally opened as a pk. Since that time, betting action has been about 50/50 on both sides, but the odds have shifted to the Lakers. As of this writing, they are a -2 favorite. The total opened as 218 and that is where it stands at most sportsbooks. Nearly 70 percent of the action on the over.
It’s always tough to bet on the Lakers, but I think there is plenty of value in this spot. The line movement makes them seem like a sharp bet, and they are a much better home team compared to the road, where they are abysmal. They are near .500 with a 12-13 record at Staples, but just 7-24 away from their home arena.
This isn’t much of a road trip for the Kings, but I could see them taking the Lakers a bit more lightly than they should, particularly after their recent run of wins against much better teams. Let’s not also forget – this is a rivalry. These teams don’t like each other, and that goes back decades. Even with L.A. likely out of the playoffs, they will be ready to play tonight and should get up for this one.
Pick: Lakers -2
