Charlotte Hornets at Detroit Pistons -4.5 Total: 207

Both the visiting Hornets and Pistons need this game to start off the second half of the season strong as they battle for playoff spots. Detroit won a game on Jan. 5th against Charlotte at the Palace by a score of 115-114.

Charlotte has seen its record tumble since the second half the season began. They’re on the roughest stretch of their season, winning just 11 out of their last 12 contests. After a strong start to the year, their record has fallen to 24-32. Their last day of action was on Feb. 15th, a home loss against the visiting Raptors.

The Hornets still have playoff hopes, but they will have to go through Detroit to grab the 8th seed that the Pistons currently hold in the Eastern Conference. At 27-30, Detroit would make the playoff if the season ended today, but have four teams behind them that are three or fewer games back.

Detroit has been the subject of trade rumors throughout the week. Guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope has been the subject of recent trade rumors, but guard Reggie Jackson and Andre Drummond have also been the subject of trade talk. Jackson seems to be the player the Pistons want to deal. He’s played poorly over the past month and still has three years left on a 5-year, 80-million-dollar deal.

Betting Action

The Pistons opened as a -5 favorite briefly before moving to -4.5. So far, the clear majority of wagers have been on Detroit, but the odds have moved in the other direction.

Even with the line moving the other way slightly – I have a lot of interest in the Pistons tonight. The trade stuff is something to keep an eye on, but I don’t think it’s likely that they move Pope or Drummond. Reggie Jackson will be dealt if possible, but he isn’t much of a downgrade, especially with him losing minutes to backup, Ish Smith, as of late.

Detroit is an excellent defensive team, and they’re a much better squad at home, as well. With Charlotte struggling to get anything done these days – the home team has a good chance of taking this game by double digits.

Pick: Pistons -4.5

Houston Rockets at New Orleans Pelicans +4 Total: 227

This game should garner a lot of ratings tonight. The biggest deal of the deadline so far is easily the Cousins to the Pelicans deal. He is fully expected to be in the lineup tonight with no minute restrictions.

The Cousins’ move comes at the right time for the Pelicans. They’re still not shoe-in for a spot in the Western Conference playoffs, but they are just 2.5 games back of 8th seeded, Denver. They’re sitting at 23-34 and have the Kings and Trail Blazers to fight with for the last playoff spot, as well.

The Rockets made a deal at the deadline to acquire guard Lou Williams from the Lakers to add extra scoring to their bench. It’s a minor move compared to the Cousins’ trade but is one that will help Houston add more scoring. However, Williams will not suit up for tonight’s contest.

The franchise is having one of its best years in history. They are third in the West with a 40-18 record, just behind the NBA-leading Warriors and Spurs. Houston last played on Feb. 15th at Miami and lost 109-117.

Betting Action

The Rockets opened at -3 and have shifted to -4 as of this writing. About 70 percent of wagers have come in on Houston so far.

The Rockets are clearly a powerhouse in the West, but they’re a team that is extremely poor defensively, and such they run at such a fast pace, it gives opposing offenses plenty of time to score.

New Orleans is 21st in the league in scoring, but they will get a nice bump with Cousins playing 35 minutes a night when it comes to offense. The Rockets lack the size to check him or Davis tonight, and I think they have a good chance to win this game outright.

Pick: Pelicans +4
