Atlanta Hawks at Boston Celtics +4.5 Total: 211.5
Boston continued their excellent run of play last night, notching a 104-98 victory over the Boston Celtics. They’re firmly second in the Eastern Conference with a 38-21 record and are just three games behind the East-leading, Cleveland Cavaliers.
The Hawks are very much in the thick of the Eastern playoff picture but have lost their last three games, including a 105-86 loss to the visiting Magic last Saturday evening. Atlanta has a 32-26 record and is just two games behind the fourth-seeded, Toronto Raptors.
The odds opened with Boston as a -5.5 favorite. However, despite receiving more than 80 percent of betting action, the Celtics are now sitting at -4.5.
It’s tough to bet against the Celtics these days. Though they didn’t make any huge moves at the deadline – they’re still one of the NBA’s best teams. They’re particularly tough on their home court where they have gone 20-8 this season.
However, we have a classic case of reverse line movement in this game. There’s also a good chance the odds get worse for Boston as it seems the sharp money is favoring the Hawks.
There’s the Dwight Howard-Al Horford revenge narrative going on this one, but we must look at Atlanta’s spot coming into this game. They’re coming off three days of rest while the Celtics played last night. They also have a dominant frontcourt, an area where Boston struggles, especially when it comes to rebounding.
Boston is getting a lot of public love, but 4.5 points are quite a bit for a game that I think Atlanta can win outright. The matchup favors them, they are well-rested, and one of the better teams in the East.
Pick: Hawks +4.5
Minnesota Timberwolves at Sacramento Kings +5 Total: 212
The Wolves travel to Sacramento in hopes of keeping their playoff hopes alive against a team they’ve struggled against this season.
Minnesota’s season has not gone to plan, as many thought they would take a step forward this season and make the postseason. They still have a shot at getting to the playoffs, but it’s going to be an uphill battle.
After losing to the Rockets on Saturday 142-130, the Timberwolves’ record fell to 23-36. While they are just three games behind a playoff spot, four other teams are fighting to make the postseason that are ahead of them.
One of those teams is the Sacramento Kings, a franchise that traded away All-Star forward, DeMarcus Cousins just before the All-Star break ended. Since trading Cousins, the Kings have played two games, which amounted to one win and one loss.
They were last in action on Saturday, losing 99-85 to the Charlotte Hornets. Sacramento is just a single game behind the Denver Nuggets for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference with a 25-34 mark.
The Timberwolves opened as a -3.5 favorite. Betting action has been split so far between the two teams. The odds have moved in favor of the Wolves so far. They are now -5 at most sportsbooks.
The Kings have beaten the Wolves twice this season, but those were both when they had DeMarcus Cousins. Minnesota certainly isn’t a team to fear, but they do have athletic big men up front and should dominate this game on the glass.
They’re also on the brink of elimination of the playoff race and need every game they can get right now. Losing to teams fighting for the final 8th spot is something they just can’t afford to do right now.
The Kings always play well at home, but I think this is a spot where the visitors can win by double-digits.
Pick: Timberwolves -5
