Philadelphia 76ers at Miami Heat -9 Total: 213
Philadelphia, as a franchise, is having one of their best seasons in years. However, that still will likely not end in a playoff berth for the 76ers. With a 22-35 record, they are all but eliminated from postseason considerable, but are still mathematically eligible.
They are in the middle of a two-game losing slide, with their latest defeat coming at the hands of Golden State on Monday evening at the Wells Fargo Center. Philly was within striking distance for much of the game, before the Warriors finished the final quarter strong to win 119-108.
Miami is on the outside looking in for a playoff spot, but they are right in contention to make the postseason. They’ve played excellent basketball over the last month but did lose 89-96 to the visiting Dallas Mavericks on Monday evening.
Still, the Heat are nipping on the heels of the eighth-seeded Pistons. At 27-33, they are just two games behind Detroit for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.
The Sixers have gotten more than 60 percent of wagers so far, but the line has gone in the other direction. Miami opened as a -7.5 favorite, but the odds have now shifted to -9 at most online sportsbooks.
It would have been nice to get this one at -7.5, but I still think there is plenty of value with the Heat at -9. The Sixers are a much better team than most give them credit for, but they will once again be without Joel Embiid in this contest.
Let’s also not forget that they’re one of the worst teams on the road in the NBA. They’re 8-20 away from the Wells Fargo Center. They’re coming off the same amount of rest as Miami, but they expended a lot of energy in their loss on Monday to Golden State.
Matchup-wise, this is a tough draw for Philly. Whiteside should dominate the paint against Jahlil Okafor, who is one of the league’s worst defenders and rebounders at the center position. They’re much deeper in other areas, as well. Lay the points with the home squad.
Pick: Heat -9
Brooklyn Nets at Sacramento Kings -2 Total: 216
Brooklyn at Sacramento isn’t a game that many will be tuning into on this big slate but that doesn’t mean it’s void of betting opportunities.
There isn’t much positive to say about the Nets this year. They’re the NBA’s worst franchise this season, and no other team is close. Their record fell to 9-49 after losing to the Golden State Warriors on Saturday.
After trading DeMarcus Cousins at the trading deadline, the Kings came out strong after the All-Star break winning their first game. However, they’ve lost their last two games, including a 102-88 defeat at the hands on the Timberwolves on Monday.
The Kings now have a 25-35 record. They are right in the thick of the playoff hunt in the Western Conference and are just two games behind the eighth-seeded, Denver Nuggets. Every game is critical for Sacramento as we get closer to the end of the season.
Action has been heavy on the Kings since they opened at -4. However, like our above Heat pick, the market has gone the other way. Right now, the Kings are -2 or -2.5 at sportsbooks.
I don’t think the Kings are intentionally tanking, I mean, they’re two games away from a playoff spot – but I haven’t seen a lot of effort from them in the past two games. Offensively, they’re an absolute disaster on offense. Dave Joerger has also been messing with his rotations lately as well, which doesn’t exactly build continuity.
We not only have that in our favor but reverse line movement, as well. The Nets are the most well-rested team on this slate, last playing on Saturday evening. They spread their minutes around and should have no issues keeping this game close with a weak Sacramento team or winning outright.
Pick: Nets +2
