NBA Betting 3-09-17 – Free Picks
We went 1-1 last night, notching a win over the Bucks -5 over the Knicks, but losing with the Pelicans -2. Although, I feel the New Orleans loss was a bit of run bad, considering Anthony Davis got injured in the game.
Tonight’s slate is smaller but is one that I like quite a bit. As always, all our odds will be quoted from BetOnline (Full Review) and are accurate at the time of posting. However, be sure to line shop for the best price before placing your bet.

Cleveland Cavaliers at Detroit Pistons +5.5 Total: 217.5
Cleveland has been playing poorly for the past month. The loss of Kevin Love has hurt them, and defensively they have been especially poor over their last few games. In back-to-back games against the Heat, both losses, they gave up 120 and 106 points, respectively.
Their loss on Monday evening against the visiting Heat was their third in the last four games. The Cavaliers are still first in the Eastern Conference, but their lead is shrinking in recent weeks. After the Celtics win last night, they’re now just 2.5 games behind Cleveland. Going into tonight’s game, the Cavs have a 42-40 record.
Detroit is coming off a game last night at Indiana. The Pistons were blown out of the building by the Pacers by a score of 98-115. Currently, they are tied for the 7th spot in the East with 31-33 record with the Chicago Bulls.
While it is likely they will make the playoffs – it’s far from a guarantee. Their play has been uneven over the past few weeks, and both the Heat and the Bucks are just a half-game behind them in the standings.
The Cavaliers opened as a -3.5-favorite overnight. Betting action has been heavy on Cleveland, which has shifted the odds to Cleveland -5.5 at most online sportsbooks.
What a spot for Cleveland. I did manage to grab them at -5, but I think there is still plenty of value even if this line heads to -6, which it probably will. Detroit is coming off a game last night, and the Cavaliers can’t afford to “go through the motions” anymore with lower or middle tier teams in this league.
Monday’s loss was a definite wake-up call for LeBron James and Kyrie Irving, both of which I expect to dominate tonight without much resistance. Detroit is a strong team on their own floor, but Cleveland is second, only to the Celtics, for winning percentage on the road in the East.
This is a veteran team that is in danger of losing the top seed in the conference. I expect them to dominate tonight in what could easily be a double-digit victory.
Pick: Cavaliers -5.5
Philadelphia 76ers at Portland Trail Blazers -9.5 Total: 207
The Sixers head to Portland in the middle of a losing streak while the Blazers are red hot as they fight for a playoff spot in the West.
Philadelphia won’t make the postseason this year, but it’s still one of the best seasons in years for the franchise. The 76ers are coming off an 112-98 defeat against the visiting Milwaukee Bucks on Monday evening.
The loss dropped their overall record to 23-40 and moved their losing streak to three games. They’re still relatively short-handed with several injuries, most notably, to Joel Embiid. The rookie center is expected to win Rookie of the Year, even though his season ended on March 1st.
Portland is coming off a win on Tuesday at Oklahoma City, their third straight victory. They welcome the Sixers to the Moda Center after a two-game road trip. Portland has a lot to play for in the standings this week.
With a record of 27-35, the Blazers are just one game out of the playoffs. They trail the Denver Nuggets by just one game for the 8th and final postseason spot.
Portland opened as a -10 favorite. The odds have moved to -9.5 at most sportsbooks since opening. Betting action has been mostly even on both sides, with the 76ers getting slightly more wagers.
Philly has suffered some rough defeats lately. It was only a matter of time before this team came back down to earth. However, in this spot, I think they’re being undervalued. The Sixers have major issues with strong defensive teams and dominant big men. Portland has neither of these.
Fundamentally, they’re playing an excellent team basketball, (at least offensively) even going deep into their bench. I don’t think it’s crazy to predict an outright upset in this spot, so it’s easy to take the +9.5 with the visitors.
Pick: 76ers +9.5
