Charlotte Hornets at Orlando Magic +5 Total: 208
It’s do or die now for the Hornets, as there isn’t much time left in the season and they’re still on the outside looking in, for a playoff spot. Charlotte is playing .500 basketball over their last ten games and must do better than that down the stretch if they want a ticket to the postseason.
They are coming off a 105-90 victory over the visiting Hawks on Monday. The win pushed their record to 31-39. Still, they have an uphill battle for the 8th seed in the East. They’re currently 3.5 games behind the Heat which hold the final playoff spot in the conference. There are also several teams ahead of Charlotte.
The Magic have long been written off for postseason consideration. Orlando never seems to be a bottom of the barrel team. They have a solid core of young talent, but the team has rarely surfaced above mediocrity in recent years.
They sit near the bottom of the conference with a 26-45 record. Orlando is coming off a victory over the 76ers on Monday. They have won their past two games, after losing their previous four straight.
The Hornets opened as a -4 favorite. About 60 percent of wagers have come in on Charlotte so far. That has pushed the line to -5 at most sportsbooks.
It would have been nicer to get the Hornets at -4, but I still think there is plenty of value at -5. There’s a good chance the line continues to move as we get closer to tip, as well. Not only is Charlotte the better team, but they have a lot to play for in this matchup, where the Magic have essentially already shut the door on their season.
I love Charlotte tonight on the road also because they’re going to face one of the most apathetic fan bases in the league. They should have no issues winning this one and would not be shocked to see a double-digit blowout.
Pick: Hornets -5
Atlanta Hawks at Washington Wizards -7 Total: 215
Atlanta travels to Washington looking to break their current run of poor play.
The Hawks are currently in the middle of a four-game losing streak. They also have not played well over the last few weeks, going just 3-7 over their last ten contests. Atlanta last played on Monday evening, losing to the Hawks on the road.
Despite their recent slide, they’re still firmly in the playoffs in the East. Currently, they sit with a 37-33 record, which is good enough for the 5th spot.
Washington is having a fantastic season. However, after starting the second half off on a hot streak, they’ve been lost four out of their last five contests. The Wizards last played on Monday, losing at Boston.
Two weeks ago, the Wizards were gaining on Cleveland, but the Cavaliers have righted the ship, for the most part. They are now the third seed in the East with a 42-38 record but are just a half-game ahead of the Raptors.
Action has been split 50/50 between the Hawks and Wizards. The line opened with the Hawks as a -7 favorite and that is where they stand at just about every sportsbook online.
It’s worth noting that Paul Millsap and Kent Bazemore will both be out tonight for Atlanta. Washington isn’t a frontcourt dominated team, but Millsap does a lot, not just regarding grabbing boards, but also as a scorer. Howard will be relied on the block to score as the top option, a role he’s never truly embraced.
Let’s also not forget the Wizards are a much deeper team, even with the Hawks fully healthy. Their bench has several excellent scorers, and they have a host of places to go with their starting five. They’ve also been a powerhouse at home, going 27-10 at the Verizon Center and blowing many teams out of the building.
Pick: Wizards -7
