The Hornets head to the twin cities with one of the best starts to the season in years. Although they lost their last two games, including a 93-100 defeat at Cleveland on Sunday, they still have one of the best records in the East at 6-3.
The Wolves came into the season with higher expectations compared to last season, but they have come out of the game struggling with a 3-6 record. Although, they did win two out of their last three games, including a 125-99 victory over the Lakers on Saturday. Andrew Wiggins exploded for a career-high 47 points in the win.
The odds opened with Charlotte as -1.5 favorites at Minnesota. The betting public has been all over the Hornets so far, with 75 percent of bets being placed on them. Despite that, the odds haven’t moved off the opening number of Charlotte -1.5 at most sportsbooks.
Like the Lakers, a team I mention below, it’s not a stretch to say that Charlotte is playing over their ability to start the season. They’re easily a playoff team in the East, but if the Timberwolves were in the east, don’t you think they would be in contention for a top seed?
The Wolves are a much better home team and match up well against the Hornets, who have no answer for Karl-Anthony Towns down low. One can easily make an argument that the Wolves deserve to be favored in this one. Take the points without hesitation.
Pick: Timberwolves +1.5
Brooklyn Nets at Los Angeles Lakers -6.5 Total: 221
The Nets won’t need to travel for tonight’s contest. It’s just another team bus from the hotel, back to Staples Center for another game against the Lakers. Brooklyn played last night in the same building, losing in a blowout 127-95 against the L.A. Clippers.
The loss put the Nets record at 4-6 on the season. They began this west coast road trip with a win against the Suns in Phoenix but faced much tougher competition against the Clippers last night. They have one more game on the trip, not including tonight’s Friday matchup at Oklahoma City.
The Lakers have been one of the league’s biggest surprises this season, under new head coach, Luke Walton. L.A. has won three out of their last five games but did drop a game on Sunday at Minnesota, losing 125-99. The loss put their record at 6-5, still a game above .500.
Betting action has been for the Lakers in this one. Over 60 percent of wagers have come in on L.A., but the odds have moved for the Nets after L.A. opened at -7. The odds have now moved to Lakers -6.5 across the board.
I’ve mentioned in other posts how I feel that the Lakers are improved, but are still playing over their head. They’re going to be a lot better than the team that won 21 wins last season, but it’s far too early to consider them a playoff contender.
The Lakers are going to be well-rested for tonight’s contest, but the Nets starters pretty much all played under 25 minutes last night due to the blowout against the Clippers. They’re going to be motivated after last night’s beating (they’re also a decent team) and should keep this one close, or possibly win outright.
Pick: Nets +6.5
