NBA Tipoff 2017 – Free Picks
The NBA is back. The 2017-18 season tips off tonight with two games and then a full slate tomorrow evening. Tonight, the Celtics will take on the Cavaliers in Cleveland. Sparks should fly in what projects to be a close game with Isaiah Thomas and Kyrie Irving both facing their former teams. However, Thomas will miss the first month or two with a hip injury. The Rockets take on the Warriors in the late game.

Boston Celtics at Cleveland Cavaliers -4 Total: 212.5
The Celtics and Cavaliers will look a bit different compared to last season. As mentioned above, Boston moved Isaiah Thomas and Jae Crowder for Irving in the offseason. They also signed forward, Gordon Hayward. Rookie Jayson Tatum appears to be the starter at the PF spot, with Jaylen Brown holding down the two.
Without Thomas, the Cavaliers will go with Rose at point guard and the newly acquired, Dwayne Wade, at shooting guard. King James mans the SF spot and former Celtic-Jae Crowder gets the nod at power forward. Love hands center duties.
Cleveland opened at -3 and has seen their advantage grow. Tickets have been mostly even between the two sides, but the Cavaliers are now -4 at most sportsbooks, including SportsBetting.ag. The total has dropped about two points since opening at 214.5 and now sits at 212.5
I’m going with the line move. Cleveland, despite missing Thomas and Irving, may end up being a better team than they were last season. Wade is a capable scorer and has a previous repertoire with LeBron and Crowder is an underrated defender. The Cavaliers add a defensive and offensive punch off the bench, with Tristan Thompson and J.R. Smith, respectively.
Boston will be a good team in the East, but are still firmly behind the Cavaliers, especially defensively. They have no one to guard LeBron tonight or even slow him down and they should get eaten alive in the frontcourt.
Houston Rockets +9.5 at Golden State Warriors -9.5 Total: 229
After getting eliminated by the Spurs in the playoffs, the Rockets moved to shake up their roster and did so by signing point guard, Chris Paul, as a free agent. Harden and Paul now make one of the West’s most dynamic backcourts. Of course, that title probably goes to their opponents tonight, the Warriors, which have Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson. Golden State returns all key starters from their title run last season.
The Warriors opened as a -9 favorite. That has moved to -9.5, but them taking around 60 percent of wagers so far. The total opened at a healthy 232 points, but has since dropped to 229.
I like the Rockets in the opener getting +9.5. I think the Paul and Harden connection will get off to a running start in the first game of the season. Paul is an excellent distributor and should improve his numbers and not hurt them. We’ve seen the Warriors lazy on defense at many times last season, and even with Klay Thompson, who is a good defender, they still may have a tough time limiting this backcourt.
