The New England Patriots’ Edge Vs. The Jets
The 2019 version of the New England Patriots is not about Tom Brady, but instead, about their defense. Having the best quarterback of all-time sure helps. But the Pats have been winning mostly with their defense this season.
New England enters Week 7 with the best total defense in the NFL, allowing just 234.7 total yards and only 8.0 points per game.
The Jets will get Quarterback, Sam Darnold, back this week after he has missed the past several weeks with mononucleosis.
A Second-year QB With A Lot To Learn
He is certainly an upgrade over Luke Falk, but we can’t forget he still is a second-year QB with a lot to learn. Darnold had a good game against Dallas last week, but he made a few questionable throws.
I can see Sam getting picked apart by a Patriots’ defense that leads the NFL with 14 interceptions after six games. On offense, New England will get back their 2019 first-round selection WR N’Keal Harry.
This week was the rookie’s first practice since the end of August, and it came at the right time, especially with the Patriots’ WR struggling to stay healthy.
The NY Jets’ Edge Vs. The Patriots
It’s going to sound crazy, but the best chance the Jets has of keeping this game close comes in the matchup between their defense vs. Tom Brady.
The offense looks like the weakest link for the Patriots in 2019. By this, I’m not implying they are trash. Not at all. But the unit is suspect, and it has struggled to find consistency.
The Patriots offensive line is the biggest problem. At the beginning of the season, New England lost LT Isaiah Wynn due to injury and center David Andrews due to an unexpected heart condition. That left New England with a thin offensive line for the year.
Facing One Of The Few Teams Still Using Fullbacks
It doesn’t help the team also lost FB James Devlin late in September. The Patriots are one of the few teams that still use fullbacks, and Devlin is one of the best few remaining in the league.
The Jets harassed Cowboys QB Dak Prescott last week. They only sacked him once, but Dak was never comfortable in the pocket and had to scramble a lot to find time to throw the football.
New York expects to do the same to Tom Brady, whose mobility is well-known limited. The team might get back LB CJ Mosley for this game. He will be a game-time decision, but if he’s there, his mere presence will boost the defense.
New England Patriots Vs. New York Jets Week 7 Prediction
There is no reason to think New England will lose this game. They should be 7-0 after this week and soon to be 8-0 with the Cleveland Browns going into Foxborough next weekend.
But to cover a double-digit spread on the road is another story. After all, this remains a divisional rivalry game, and these two teams don’t like each other.
The Jets’ defensive coordinator Greg Williams is known for blitzing and putting pressure on the quarterbacks. This usually wouldn’t be a concern for Tom Brady because he knows how to manipulate a defense, but the protection from his offensive line has been awful all season.
New York’s defense will be aggressive and should apply enough pressure on Brady to keep this contest close. The Patriots will win this game on the road, but the smart move is to take the points — bet Jets +10.
