Betting on the New Orleans Bowl: UAB Vs. Appalachian State Betting Line & Pick

New Orleans Bowl Betting Preview

The 2019 season was too good to be true for the Appalachian State Mountaineers. After a 12-1 record, their head coach took a new job with Missouri.

Now the Mountaineers will clash against UAB Blazers without Eliah Drinkwitz in the sidelines during the New Orleans Bowl.

Let’s break it down.

The Appalachian State Mountaineers Form To Face UAB

The Mountaineers have been impressive all season, posting a 12-1 record while winning the Sun Belt title.

Of course, when things are going right with the small schools, there is always a bigger program trying to do the same. Missouri hired head coach Eliah Drinkwitz, making him the second-youngest coach of a Power 5 school, after Oklahoma’s Lincoln Riley.

Appalachian State will go into the New Orleans bowl without Drinkwitz on the sidelines. The Mountaineers haven’t named an interim coach just yet, but this is familiar territory. Last season, the same thing happened when Scott Satterfield left to take the Louisville job.

Outstanding Defense

Appalachian State averages 39.4 points per game this season, which ranks as the 24th best number in the entire nation. Over the last four wins, they have averaged 46.0 points per contest.

Their defense is excellent, as well. They allowed only 20.2 points per game in 2019.

The UAB Blazers Form To Face Appalachian State

UAB might have the same predicament as Appalachian State. Bill Clark, who has led the Blazers to three consecutive bowls, is being mentioned as a candidate for the Memphis job for next season.

The Blazers are coming off a severe loss to Florida Atlantic in the Conference USA title game. The 49-6 defeat saw the team play their worst game of the season.

A Solid team

UAB doesn’t do anything particularly out of the ordinary, but they grind as a team. The Blazers average 23.6 points per game this season while allowing 20.8 PPG.

Their best player is WR Austin Watkins, who has recorded 933 yards in 47 catches this season. He also has five touchdowns receptions. Watkins’ 19.9 yards per reception average is the 16th best from all wideouts in the nation.

Appalachian State vs. UAB Blazers New Orleans Bowl Picks

The Blazers have been a good team, and perhaps an overachieving program, considering the surrounding talent. UAB got a dose of reality when they faced Florida Atlantic.

The result for the New Orleans Bowl might not be as one-sided as it was in the Conference USA final. Still, Appalachian State is a program that has recruited well over the last few years, and the departure of their coaches hasn’t affected any of their performance. They should win this game by a three-score margin. Bet Appalachian State -16.5.
