NFL Week 5 Against The Spread Picks Battle
Joe hit some winners last week while I struggled a bit. I’m not going to lie.
Wait. Am I leaking confidence? No way, Jose. It’s an excellent week to bounce and find some winners. These are the best picks against the spread of the NFL Week 5.
Joe’s NFL Week 5 Picks Against The Spread
Las Vegas Raiders +13 vs. Kansas City
The Raiders came back down to earth the past two weeks after beating New Orleans in their first-ever home game. They were beaten handily by the Patriots at Foxboro in Week 3 and lost a close game against the Bills last week.
I’m not especially high on the Raiders this season, but I do think this number is a little too high in this spot against the Kansas City chiefs.
It’s nearly two touchdowns and that’s a lot considering how strong Oakland’s offense has looked this season. The Chiefs are the Chiefs. However, even though they won against New England last week, their defense looked awfully shaky.
They “forced” a lot of turnovers, but many of these were just due to the terrible play of Hoyer and Stidham.
Derek Carr and the Raiders offense have looked good this season and I trust they will be able to put up points against a leaky KC defense. Kansas City will surely score plenty on their own, but this number too high for me, especially with the Chiefs coming off a short week after a rescheduled Monday night game.
Pittsburgh Steelers -7 vs. the Eagles
Pittsburgh had their bye in Week 4 due to their game against the Titans being postponed due to many players testing positive for COVID. We last saw them against the visiting Texans, a game they won 28-21.
Philadelphia finally got their first win of the season against the 49ers on Sunday in what was an ugly game. The Eagles still have a ton of issues.
Their receiving corps is still decimated and Wentz has no protection behind a porous offensive line.
You have to love the Steelers in this spot. They’ve gotten healthier over their break and their defense was already ferocious. The Eagles are coming off a slightly short week and despite their win, the offense did not look close to “fixed” by any stretch.
Lay the points with the rested home team in Pittsburgh.
Seattle Seahawks -7 vs. the Vikings
Pete Carroll has decided to put the ball in his QB’s hands this season and it has worked wonderfully. “Let Russ Cook” should be their mantra in Seattle from here on out.
They had their issues at Miami last week but still got out of there with a 31-23 win to put their record at 4-0.
Minnesota did get their first win against the lowly Texans last week in Houston, but the team still has plenty of issues. Their defense has been awful. Their schedule has not been easy to start the year but there’s still plenty of reasons they’re 1-3.
The Seahawks at home put up points in bunches and should have no issues dropping 30 or so against this poor Vikings’ defense. Minnesota also sticks to the run and is far too conservative with their play-calling.
This will likely force Cousins to air the ball out early or Minnesota will simply play themselves out of the game with too much commitment to the run game. Lay the points with the home team.

Atlanta Falcons -1 vs. the Panthers
The Falcons can’t start 0-5, right?
In recent years, Atlanta has dominated the series, winning seven of the last eight, including six in a row. In the previous three meetings, they beat Carolina by double-digits.
Props to the Panthers for being a lot better than we thought, but there is no way they win three in a row while Atlanta loses their fifth straight.
Atlanta Falcons -1 works for me. There is no value in taking the points, and the home team is desperate for a win. This is the week they will get their first.
Miami Dolphins +9 vs. San Francisco
Wait. Am I going to back the Dolphins for the second week in a row? You bet I am.
The Niners have a massive problem at quarterback. Nick Mullens and C.J. Beathard are not good and started Jimmy Garoppolo has been limited in practice with a high ankle sprain. Even if Jimmy plays, how mobile can he be on Sunday?
Miami is not a great team. They have good drives on offense at times, but for the most part, it seems like Ryan Fitzpatrick is just daring defenses to intercept him.
Okay, maybe I’m not making a great argument in favor of the Dolphins. But I can’t see Niners winning by double-digits with either of their backup quarterbacks.
Take the points.
Minnesota Vikings +7 at Seattle
Joe and I will go directly against each other in this one. I like Seattle’s offense, but their defense is atrocious, especially against the pass. Right now, they are the worst in the NFL.
I get the Vikings’ defense is not great either, but they showed some improvement against Houston last week.
The Seahawks should win this game without problems, don’t get wrong. But laying down seven is a lot. Seattle has the bad habit of letting teams back in games. Just ask the Patriots and Cowboys.
I see the Vikings scoring late and pulling a backdoor cover. Grab the points.
