Peach Bowl Betting Preview

It doesn’t matter if Oklahoma was the last name to get into the playoffs. The Sooners have a chance to knock out the best team in the country when they face the LSU Tigers in the first game of the College Football Playoffs at the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl.

The game is set to be played at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on December 28th. There are a few days before the meeting, but why wait? Let’s look at how they match up against each other.

Early on, the Tigers were listed -8 in most places, but that number didn’t last long. LSU is now -13 in most markets and -12.5 in others.

The betting lines for the peach bowl show that LSU is getting 66% of the betting public on their side. No sportsbook has taken the odds to -14 just yet.

Oklahoma’s Path To The 2019 College Football Playoffs

The Sooners opened the season +1800 to win the National Championship. Right now, they are at -1200 to win it all. It all starts by putting together a good season inside the Big 12. Even though they have won the Conference title for four straight years, it is always a challenge.

Oklahoma has lost a Heisman Trophy caliber quarterback in each of the last two seasons. Luckily, they got Jalen Hurts transferred from Alabama, and the QB has been outstanding.

Hurts is a cool and collected guy who evolved from being a game manager to an absolute beast with the Sooners. In 2019 Hurts recorded 3634 passing yards, 32 passing touchdowns, and just seven interceptions. The hard part is to stop him when he decides to run. He has added 1255 rushing yards and another 18 TDs this season.

Oklahoma’s Offensive Power

Oklahoma’s success is based on their offense power. Hurts’ number one guy is WR CeeDee Lamb, who leads the team with 1208 yards. His 14 touchdown receptions are the best inside the Big 12.

The Sooners beat four ranked opponents this season, two of those wins were against Baylor. In fact, in the first meeting against the Bears, they had to overcome a 25-point deficit to win 34-31 in the end. Without that comeback, they wouldn’t be in the playoffs.

Their only loss was at Kansas State in a shootout that ended 48-41. Oklahoma didn’t do anything different that day. They just couldn’t stop the Wildcats running offense, which recorded 213 yards on the ground along with six touchdowns.

This will be head coach Lincoln Riley’s third playoffs game with the Sooners. Riley lost both times against SEC teams, first against Georgia and last season against Alabama.

LSU’s Path To The 2019 College Football Playoffs

Let’s not kid ourselves. Nobody was expecting this kind of season from LSU. The Tigers were +3300 to win the National Championship when the season started. After an undefeated regular season, they are the top seed, listed at +125.

It all starts with the trust coach Ed Oregon has on QB Joe Burrow. Coach O has put together an offense based on Burrow’s passing skills. They don’t hesitate to go against any team, and they always have an aggressive approach.

Out of the four teams inside the College Football, the Tigers have the best resume in terms of programs they have beaten this year. LSU has impressive road wins over Texas and Alabama. They also beat Florida and Auburn at home, not to mention they destroyed Georgia in the SEC Championship game.

By the time LSU beat Bama in Tuscaloosa, I think the nation had realized the Tigers were absolutely a serious contender. Once you take Bama out of the equation, and with that win coming on the road, it became a statement victory.

Burrow Is Unstoppable

Senior QB Joe Burrow hasn’t been stopped all season, and he has a favorable matchup against Oklahoma. The Sooners defense gives up 21.2 points per game, which is the worst number out of the four defenses in the playoffs. They allowed 31 points to Houston, 48 to Kansas State, 41 to Iowa State, and 31 against Baylor. None of those offenses are as good as LSU’s.

Burrow leads the SEC with 48 touchdowns thrown this season. That number is an all-time record for any QB inside the Conference. He also has thrown the second-most yards in the nation this season with 4715.

Joe is about to become the Heisman Trophy winner. His 349 yards, 4 TDs display against Georgia, was just the cherry on top of a fantastic season. Against Oklahoma, he could set a record of passing touchdowns in a playoff game. Burrow has a massive edge in this matchup.

Oklahoma Vs. LSU College Football Playoffs Pick

Oklahoma has made a habit of beating teams just by outscoring them. However, this might be a contest where the opposing offense is actually better than the Sooners.

I don’t have a doubt in my mind that LSU will be the winner of the game, but covering 13 points or even -13.5 will be hard, even for them. The problem won’t be scoring every time their offense is on the field. The issue is that Oklahoma can do the same to keep the game within striking distance.

Even if LSU gets a large lead at any point, the Sooners can always score during garbage time, executing the classic backdoor cover. The spread is too big for my taste. Bet Oklahoma +13.5.
