Penguins Vs. Islanders Predictions | NHL Playoffs 2019 Game 1 Picks

Pittsburgh Penguins Vs. New York Islanders Betting Preview

I’m very excited about this one. The NHL playoffs have a rivalry matchup set for us, the hockey betting fans, right out of the gate. The Pittsburgh Penguins will visit the New York Islanders in game one of their first round playoffs series, on Wednesday Night. Despite many think the Penguins underperformed all season, they finished just three points away from the Islanders in the Metropolitan Division standings; but also just four away from the Capitals.

The season series finished with two wins apiece with the Penguins scoring 13 goals in the series and the Isles 12. New York does struggle on the offensive side, scoring only 2.72 goals per game. They ranked 22nd in the NHL and is one of the two playoffs teams (the Dallas Stars being the other) that ranked in the bottom third in scoring. The Islanders are +1700 to win the Stanley Cup according to people making the odds at MyBookie.ag. The Penguins are also listed at +1700. That’s an implied probability of winning of close to 6% from the 16 teams remaining in the playoffs.

The fact that the Islanders and the Penguins have the same odds to win the cup should tell you home-ice means next to nothing in this series. Both teams know each other pretty well, being division rivals. It’s all about who got to this point hotter and who can carry with the momentum. The best matchup of the series is trying to see the Islanders defense trying to stop Sidney Crosby and the rest of the Penguins offense. New York has one of the NHL’s premier defensive teams. The Isles had the worst defense in the league just a year ago, and this season they allowed an NHL’s best 2.33 goals per game.

Facing Crosby, but, is always a challenge, especially during the postseason. ‘Sid the kid’ reached 100 points in a season for the first time since 2004 and only for the second time since 2011. The Penguins benefited from Crosby’s top form to average 3.30 goals per game this season; sixth best in the entire league. I don’t want to overstate the playoffs experience, but Pittsburgh does have the edge here. They have won two of the last three Stanley Cups, and that should count for something. It might be the eye test talking, but I see the Penguins are a slightly the better team in this series.

Good teams come out swinging right from the start, and I feel Pittsburgh will do just that. I like the Penguins stealing game one of the series. Take them in the money line where the -110 investment is cheaper. The +1.5 puckline at -290 is a little expensive for a team that can actually win this game outright. If you want a make a bet in the game total, grab Under 5.5 goals; this series is going to a tie one. What’s the play? Penguins -110

Puckline: Penguins +1.5 (-290) vs NY Islanders -1.5 (+235)
