Philadelphia 76ers Vs. Boston Celtics – NBA Opening Night Betting Predictions
Philadelphia 76ers vs. Boston Celtics Predictions
- Spread: Celtics -5
- Game Total: 209
- Game Time: Tuesday, October 16, 2018 | 8:00 PM ET
- TD Garden, Boston, MA
- TV: TNT
The last time the 76ers and the Celtics faced each other they were battling for the right to square off against Lebron James in the Eastern Conference finals. With ‘King’ James gone to Hollywood, Philadelphia, and Boston are the top favorites to represent the East in the 2019 NBA Finals. The oddsmakers at Sportsbetting.ag made the Celtics the team to beat in the Eastern Conference at +100. The Sixers are +350 while the Toronto Raptors are close at +400. Boston also has the second-best odds in the entire NBA to win the title at +600, only behind Golden State at -175. Their path to NBA title is slightly more accessible than the rest of the teams in Western Conference. They don’t have to deal with the once again loaded Golden State Warriors.
Celtics at 5-point favorites over 76ers
For the opening game, in particular, the oddsmakers opened with the Celtics at 5-point favorites. The betting line hasn’t moved at all since its opening. The betting public doesn’t have a preference either. Bets are coming on both ways to Philly and Boston. The game total did have plenty of movement at Sportsbetting.ag. It opened at 206.5, and it has quickly gone up to 209. When game time hits the calendar, I’m thinking it might climb up to 209.5 or even 210. During their playoffs series last season, Philly was outplayed and mostly outcoached by Boston.
It should have been a long series or at least we all thought it was going to be that way. Instead, it ended in five games as coach Brett Brown never found answers to what the Celtics presented. The Sixers have lost seven of their last ten games against the Celtics. To turn the series around, they need more than just good performances by Joel Embiid (22.9 PPG &11.0 last season) and Ben Simmons (16.3 PPG & 7.7 APG last season). They need Markelle Fultz to stay healthy and play like a No. 1 overall pick. However, I’m thinking he’s not there yet. Coach Brown said Fultz will start games, but he won’t do so in the second half. Wait, what? The Fultz situation is strange, to say the least.
Boston is not worried about Philadelphia. If last season they were able to dominate them without Kyrie Irving or Gordon Hayward on the floor, this time it should be easier. During their playoffs series in 2017, the Celtics averaged 106.4 points per game against the 76ers. Yes, they were rolling then, and this is barely the start of a long season. But their two main stars are back. That’s a lot of firepower for Boston with the return of Irving and Hayward. Philly has won just one game of their last 11 visits to the TD Garden. The 2018 opening night won’t be the second one. The 76ers are pretty much the same team from last season as Fultz remains a wildcard. On paper, Boston should improve quite dramatically. I’m taking the team to win by 8. Boston Celtics -5.
