3 Purdue Boilermakers Vs. 1 Virginia Cavaliers Betting Preview
Purdue was one step away from elimination until Carsen Edwards received a three-point foul that kept their hopes very much alive. The Boilermakers took down Tennessee in overtime. Repeating such a remarkable performance against a number one seed like Virginia will be the biggest challenge of the season. Thrilling is the word that comes to my mind when I think about Purdue’s 99-94 win over Tennessee in the Sweet Sixteen. It had everything. It all started with a surprising early lead and a strong comeback. But it also had a late whistle and a lot of drama.
With the win, Purdue advanced to the Elite Eight for the first time since 2000. The Boilermakers blew an 18-point lead. They almost got eliminated after a horrible second half where they allowed 54 points from the Volunteers. I can’t see Purdue scoring 99 points against Virginia. But Carsen Edwards has become the player to watch in the tournament. He has been averaging 32.3 points per game during the first three rounds, which is an insane number. Edwards is putting NBA type of numbers. Against Villanova, he went off with 42 points in their 2nd round meeting.
Now, Edwards and the Boilermakers will face one of the best defenses in college basketball. The defensive effort is the only reason why the Cavaliers are a number one seed in the 2019 March Madness. Virginia survived the dangerous Oregon Ducks with a 53-49 win. Between the Ducks and the Cavs scored 102 points in their game while Purdue alone scored 99 over Tennessee. It’s going to be a battle of two very different styles.
What makes the Cavaliers impressive if they can shut anybody down when they need to. Oregon is the latest example. Virginia held the Ducks without any field goals for the last 5:43 minutes of their Sweet Sixteen matchups. The Cavs haven’t been in a Final Four since 1984. The Boilermakers have never been to the Final Four, period. At MyBookie, the betting line opened with Virginia as a 5.5 point favorite, but that line dropped a whole point since.
At the money line, the oddsmakers are giving Purdue a 37% chance of winning this game outright. The Boilermakers will face the hardest challenge of the entire season. I don’t think they have met a team quite like Virginia. The Cavaliers will go for all the loose balls and will close down the paint. To beat them, you need to earn it because every single shot will be contested.
What Purdue has on their side is the way Carsen Edwards is playing. It’s mindboggling how insane his March has been. He’s the key to the game for both teams. I can see Virginia making a solid effort to stop him, but giving up baskets to other players. This game should go down the wire. What’s the play? Purdue +4.5
