3 Texas Tech Red Raiders Vs. 1 Gonzaga Bulldogs Betting Preview
Gonzaga and Texas Tech are two teams that love to grind. Now both programs are one win away from getting the Final Four. The Zags are the favorites in the March Madness betting line, but the Red Raiders have been in the underdog cage before. It should be a fun one. As soon as the matchup was set up on Thursday night, the Bulldogs opened as 3.5-point favorites. The betting line at MyBookie.ag quickly moved up to 4-points and hasn’t moved since. 52% of the wagers have come to the Red Raiders side, which tells how little the betting community thinks of the Zags.
Texas Tech took down Michigan by swallowing their offense in the Sweet Sixteen round. The Red Raiders not only held the Wolverines to 44 points and a 32.7% from the field, but they won their matchup by 19 points. It was a beyond impressive performance in a round where we are supposed to have more balanced matchups. The Red Raiders don’t get enough credit for their defensive efforts and their discipline. We talked about Michigan a lot during the season, but Texas Tech allowed only 58.3 points per game during the year. It was the third-best number in the nation. Now during the tournament, nothing has changed; if anything it improved. They are giving up 56.3 points per game on average in the first three rounds of the Madness.
Gonzaga is entirely the other side of the coin. The Bulldogs scored 88.2 points per game during the year. Although, they are coming off their weakest showing against Florida State; they did win without finding many problems. The Zags took down a dangerous Seminoles team with a 72-58 score. Their defense was impressive, holding Florida State to 15.0% from three points. For Gonzaga beating the Seminoles was a big deal. Last season the Bulldogs were eliminated by Florida State exactly at the Sweet Sixteen round.
The people making the odds at MyBookie.ag are giving Gonzaga a 65% implied probability of winning and advancing to the Final Four. Coach Mark Few has unfinished business after taking the Zags to the final two years ago. He does have a team good enough to make a late push. Texas Tech has never passed the Elite Eight round. In fact, the only time they reached the last eight before this season was last year when they lost to Villanova. The Red Raiders have a 38% implied probability of upsetting the Zags outright.
It’s going to be quite the battle. My concern on betting the Red Raiders is they have to hold Gonzaga’s offense during 40 minutes, and that’s not easy to do. If the Zags enter the last five minutes of the game with an advance in the scoreboard, then it’s over. Mark Few and his Bulldogs know exactly how to finish games, and a 4-point spread should not be a problem. What’s the play? Gonzaga -4
