4 Virginia Tech Vs. 1 Duke March Madness Expert Picks
The Duke fans are probably still a little woozy after the team almost gave them a heart attack against the UCF. In the words of coach K, the Blue Devils were “lucky” to advance to the Sweet Sixteen. Now they are set to face the Virginia Tech Hokies looking to have a better outing than their last one. Duke’s win against UCF was way too close for those with rooting interests in the Blue Devils. Call it CBS and TNT; call it those with future bets on Duke to win March Madness, or even those just playing the March Madness bracket challenge.
Let’s give Zion some props as he took his team to the Sweet Sixteen with a two-point play that put Duke the tied the score and sent off center Tacko Fal. He was a nightmare defending the paint. Yet, that win showed how vulnerable is Duke and how the betting sites and overestimating the social media powerful tool that is Zion. The Blue Devils were +225 to win March Madness starting the tournament and now at +320 after barely beating UCF. The probability of winning the tournament went from 30% chances to 24%. It’s a considerable drop, especially knowing there are fewer teams left.
Virginia Tech will need a solid effort to put Duke on their heels for a second consecutive game. The Hokies have smoothly advanced over the Saint Louis Billikens and over the Liberty Flames. It’s safe to say neither of them is Duke or even close. VT knows exactly how to beat Duke. They did less than a month ago, but there is a massive twist from one game to another. That night Zion was injured and didn’t play when the Hokies won 77-72 at home. If it worth it, this is the first time Virginia Tech in the Sweet Sixteen since 1962. The Hokies are +2600 to win March Madness. From the sixteen teams left only Auburn, Oregon and LSU have smaller chances.
For this game, in particular, Duke opened as a 7-point favorite in the March Madness betting odds at MyBookie. The line went as high as 8-points, and then it settled back to 7. Virginia Tech has an implied probability of 27% to win this game against the Blue Devils. In a one-game scenario, those odds are attractive. The problem with betting on Virginia Tech is they haven’t faced a solid team in the tournament. Duke pretty much survived the biggest upset in the tournament. I can’t see the Devils having another weak performance on back-to-back rounds. Add to it, Duke hasn’t forgotten VT beat them just weeks ago. This becomes a quest for a personal vendetta as well.
