Since 2014, the first Women’s tournament scheduled after Wimbledon in the WTA is the Bucharest Open. The competition starts two days after the women’s finals in London and a day after the gentlemen.
The Bucharest Open is a tournament exclusively for the WTA tour played in both individuals and doubles categories on the clay surface of the Arenele BNR, in Bucharest, Romania. There isn’t a men’s category in this competition.
Many of the big names usually decline to participate because it is too close to Wimbledon. It also has the issue to be played in clay, just days after the grass season has its major tournament.
Which players have won the 2019 Bucharest Open?
The tournament will be turning five years old with the 2019 edition, which means it’s a reasonably new stop in the WTA tour. Out of the five tournaments played, there have been four different winners. The local hero Simona Halep is the only player who has won it twice. Halep was the first winner of the Bucharest Open after taking down Roberta Vinci in the final. She also won it in 2016. Halep, however, won’t be around for this year’s competition. She declined to participate in 2019 mostly because she was focusing on playing at Wimbledon, which she ended up winning over Serena Williams just days ago.
Irina-Camelia Begu is the other Romanian winner of this tournament. Begu won her trophy in the 2015 edition. In 2014, the Slovakian Anna Karolína Schmiedlová won the second edition of the competition. The current winner of the Bucharest Open is the Latvian Anastasija Sevastova. She entered the 2019 Bucharest Open as the number one seed in the bracket.
Who is the favorite to win the 2019 Bucharest Open?
The current champ Anastasija Sevastova is listed as the favorite to win this tournament in back-to-back years. Sevastova is registered +500 to win the championship with a 17% implied probability of winning the trophy once again. The Latvian is the number 11 player in the WTA ranking and is 3-4 in career WTA Finals. Sevastova actually lost to Simona Halep in the 2016 Bucharest Open final, before she was able to win it in 2018.
Viktoria Kuzmova is listed +1000 as the number one challenger for Sevastova. The Slovakian player has an implied probability of 9% of winning this tournament. Kuzmova has reached two WTA Finals on her career with a 1-1 record. Her only win at 2019 Prague Open was on a clay surface.
Veronika Kudermetova also is listed with +1000 odds to win this Bucharest Open with an implied probability of about 9%. Kudermetova is the youngest of the three betting favorites with just 22-years old. She has reached her only two career WTA Finals this year, losing both on clay at the Charleston Open in the US, and the Ladies Open Lugano in Switzerland.

What is the prize money for the 2019 Bucharest Open?
The 2019 Bucharest Open has a $250,000 total prize divided between the winners of both the singles and the doubles category. The winner of the singles tournament will take home $43,000 along 280 points for the WTA tour. The second place gets $21,400 plus 180 points. The winner of the double’s tournament earns $12,300, but also gets 280 points for the ranking.
