MMA Prop Bets

MMA prop bets are wagers on mixed martial arts events that do not have to be always be related to the final winner of the bout.

Many UFC props are related to how the fight will finish, but also you can bet on whether it will go the distance, if a particular fighter will by submission, TKO, or by decision.

UFC props not only offer profitable opportunities for sports bettors, but they offer some of the most fun that bettors can have when wagering on MMA.

How To Bet MMA Props

For the most part, placing an MMA prop bet is no different than placing a wager on another sport. Moneyline odds are almost always the default format used for American bettors.

However, there are a few things to consider when choosing a betting site to wager MMA proposition bets.

  1. Choose An MMA Proposition Sportsbook – Choosing among the top MMA betting sites is essential, but it’s also important not to choose the first sportsbook you come across. Some are far better than others. This is particularly true for MMA props, where some sites have far more betting markets and options than others.
  2. Make A Deposit – There are a variety of options for depositing at an online sportsbook. Credit card deposits are most convenient and fastest, but can also come with fees. We recommend cryptocurrencies due to their 100 percent success rate and because deposits and withdrawals are free.
  3. Find MMA Props – Props may not be listed with MMA moneyline or totals markets and may be on a separate page. In fact, that is usually the case. At most betting sites, odds for the outright winner and totals rounds of the fight may be listed weeks ahead of propositions. MMA prop bets, at most betting sites, appear 2-3 days before fight night or the day before in some cases.
  4. Place Your Bet – Once you have decided on which props you want to bet, it’s time to place your wager. You can click on each bet and add it to your bet slip. Once there, you can choose your bet amount and place your bet.
  5. Finalize Your Bet – Be sure to check your wager amount and selection, and then place your bet. Remember, once you confirm a bet, it is final. You cannot cancel or undo the wager.

How MMA Props Betting Works

MMA prop bets allow you to bet on a variety of outcomes related to an MMA fight and not only who you think it’s going to win.

You can place bets like if the fighters will touch globes or not, or if the fight ends with a KO or submission. MMA propositions are always graded as a win or a loss. There can be no pushes.

Pushes rarely occur when betting mixed martial arts, but it can happen when betting the fight-to-head and there is a draw scored by the judges.

Types Of MMA Props

We will go over the several types of MMA prop bets available and give you a breakdown of how each bet is graded, along with some of our best MMA fighter prop bets tips.

Method of Victory

The method of victory betting market allows bettors to bet on how the fight will end, such as by TKO/KO, submission, or by decision.

There are many variations to this bet, but the most common is the method of victory is betting on a specific outcome happening with a particular fighter.

Let’s look at an example below.

Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Conor McGregor

Khabib Nurmagomedov to Win by Submission
No -155 MyBookie Sportsbook
Yes +125

In this prop, we are wagering on the outcome of a fight between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor. Specifically, we can bet ‘Yes’ or ‘No.’ Yes, Khabib will win by submission or no, he will not.

‘No’ is a -155 favorite in the market, and ‘Yes’ is the underdog at +125. This bet is extremely straightforward.

For instance, if we bet that he will win by submission at -155, and he does not, our bet will be graded as a loss.

If he wins by submission and not by TKO/KO, then our wager will be graded as a winner.

Other Variations

There are many variations of this prop. Most betting sites will usually have odds for both fighters and all available methods of victory (decision, TKO/KO, or submission).

They may even go as far as letting you bet on the round the fight ends, along with the winner and method of victory. Payouts in these markets will usually be quite large.

Also, wagering may be available on how the fight will end, regardless of the victor. Something like:

Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Conor McGregor

Will This Fight End By Knockout?
No -300 MyBookie Sportsbook
Yes +200

Round-By-Round Betting

Bettors can also wager on the outcome of each round. There are a few ways to go about this, but generally, a sportsbook will have MMA prop fighter bets on winning in a specific round, or the fight ending in a specified round.

Let’s look at an example of betting on a specific fighter to win in a round.

Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Conor McGregor

Khabib Nurmagomedov to win in Round 3
+300 MyBookie Sportsbook

With markets such as this, there is not always an opposite or a ‘no’. Basically, you can’t bet that Khabib won’t win in Round 3. Instead, the opposite side would be McGregor winning in Round 3, but that is a separate market.

This bet is quite simple. Khabib would need to win the fight by any method (KO/TKO or submission) in Round 3.

If he does, the bet is graded as a winner. If not, the wager is graded as a loss.

Another option offered at most betting sites is the round that the fight will finish. Again, this is often a one-way market, and a bit more specific than wagering on the over/under than the total number of rounds in a fight.

Here is another example.

Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Conor McGregor

Khabib Nurmagomedov to win in Round 4
+1000 MyBookie Sportsbook

This wager is similar to the above bet, but in this case, the fight just has to end in the fourth round. Either fighter can win and by any means.

Once again, this wager is simple to grasp. Your bet will be graded as a winner if the fight ends in the fourth round. If it ends earlier (rounds 1-3) or later, the bet will be graded as a loss.

Will The Fight Go The Distance

This prop is extremely popular among bettors, and you can usually find it at just about every sportsbook online.

“The distance” refers to the full number of rounds in a match or fight. The term is also used frequently when betting on boxing.

This market is one of the best MMA prop bets. Bettors can wager on if the fight will go the full length and be decided by the judges or be determined “inside the distance” by KO, TKO, or stoppage.

This market may also be called, “Will the fight go to a decision?” This is the same as “will the fight go the distance,” but just worded differently.

Okay, let’s look at an example.

Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Conor McGregor

Will The Fight Go The Distance?
NO -200 MyBookie Sportsbook
Yes +150

In this example, the fight is -200 not to go the distance. The ‘Yes’ is the underdog at +150.

Depending on the stakes (title fights have more rounds), there will be three or five rounds in a UFC fight.

The ‘No’ side of this bet will win if the fight is ended before it goes to a judge’s decision. The ‘Yes’ side of the bet will win if the contest ends without a knockout or submission and is, instead, decided by the judges scoring.

Betting On Either Fighter – Inside The Distance

A variation of this bet is wagering on a specific fighter to “win inside the distance.” That means, he will win before the final bell rings and the fight ultimately is decided by the judges.

Again, let’s look at another example using Khabib and Conor.

Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Conor McGregor

Khabib Nurmagomdov to win inside the distance
+200 MyBookie Sportsbook

Our bet on Khabib will be a winner if he gets a victory inside the distance, which in UFC fights, will either be within three or five rounds. His method of victory is not relevant here, only that he wins the fight before it goes to the judge’s table.

Bettors may also see this wager written as “Khabib Nurmagomdov to win in 1-5” or “Khabib Nurmagomdov to win ITD.” ITD is an abbreviation for inside the distance.

MMA Propositions Parlays

Most betting sites do offer parlays for MMA props. It may not be for every single prop available, but it is usually true for most of their offerings.

If you’re curious, you can simply try to place a parlay with several MMA props and see if the bet is accepted.

If you don’t have funds at that sportsbook or are merely curious if they take MMA propositions, you can contact support, and they should be able to give you an answer.

MMA Prop Betting Tips And Strategy

Proposition strategy is always vital when betting on sports, including mixed martial arts.

It will differ from straight wagers, as the markets have a few noticeable differences, including many more choices and significantly different wagering limits.

Line Shopping

We are always mentioning how important it is to line shop your wagers for the best price.

This is true for all betting markets and all sports, but for MMA props, you may gain your most significant advantage by shopping prices.

While larger market sports, such as football and basketball, betting odds often move in unison, that is not the case with MMA, particularly propositions. There can be some rather substantial differences in pricing, which is fantastic for bettors who take the time to look.

Pro Tip:

Always shop your props before placing the bets.

Look For Value In The Odds

MMA fight prop bets, in many cases, will have much longer odds than other bets.

We may see some large favorites in the moneyline or outright betting in fights, but we are rarely getting more than +600 in non-prop markets.

Most props have a much lower breakeven percentage compared to standard normal wagers because they offer much higher payouts. However, if you’re an avid fan of MMA, there are plenty of situations where you may be able to spot value.

Just because a fighter is usually a submission specialist or knockout pro, it doesn’t mean that the fights will always turn out that way, especially when you have the potential for a large payout if the outcome is different.

MMA knowledge is essential to becoming a profitable prop bettor and finding value where others do not see it.

Use Multiple Sportsbooks

Not only do multiple sportsbooks help when it comes to getting the best price on your bets, as we mentioned with line shopping. But, it offers bettors a far larger selection of markets.

This isn’t the same as line shopping, but instead, getting yourself the full exposure of available markets.

Also, using multiple sportsbooks allows you to receive bonuses at multiple different betting sites, which means extra money for your bankroll.

Sportsbooks also offer free bet or freeplay promotions for large MMA events, which is another area gamblers can take advantage.

MMA Prop Bets Frequently Asked Questions

Are prop bets available for other sports?

Yes, propositions are available for just about every sport online. Some sports will have a more extensive than others, but just about every sport available has at least a few props. MMA is a sport that lends itself well to prop betting.

How long have prop bets been around? Who invented them?

The origin of prop betting dates back to the 1985 Super Bowl. William, “The Refrigerator” Perry, was given odds to score a touchdown in the game.

The bet was posted by a bookmaker looking to attract casual fans for the Super Bowl XX between the Bears and the Patriots.

Perry did score a touchdown in the game, and the sportsbook ended up losing a bit of money. However, the prop bet was born and prop markets have been expanding ever since.

Are proposition bets graded as soon as they win or lose?

It depends on the betting site. Prop bets are usually not graded as quickly as sides, moneylines, and totals.

Some sportsbooks grade much faster than others. However, most sportsbooks will grade prop bets within a half hour or less of the event or game finishing.

What are the wagering limits on MMA props?

On average, $500 is the maximum bet most online sportsbooks will take on MMA fight prop bets. Of course, this varies depending on the sportsbook.

Some sites will have higher limits and may accept more on props for higher profile or championship level fights.
