XFL Is Coming Back, What Happened?

The XFL was initially introduced in 2001. The league tried to build off the success of professional wrestling at the time, by tying the stunts of the WWE to American football. However, due to a lack of television ratings, the league folded after just one season.

Vince McMahon’s Alpha Entertainment has decided to give the XFL another go, which will begin with a 2020 inaugural season. There are some new rule changes from the previous XFL and some substantial differences compared to the NFL.

The XFL Season

The first XFL game is on Sunday, February 9th, when the New York Guardians host the Tampa Bay Vipers at 2 PM EST. The game will be broadcast on FOX.

The eight-team league will have two four-team divisions:

XFL East

  • DC Defenders
  • New York Guardians
  • St. Louis BattleHawks
  • Tampa Bay Vipers

XFL West

  • Dallas Renegades
  • Houston Roughnecks
  • Los Angeles Wildcats
  • Seattle Dragons

The XFL will feature a 10-week regular season. Each team will host five home games, and there will be no bye-week. They will play all three teams in their conference twice, with one game at home and the other on the road.

There will be a two-week postseason, which will feature the top two teams in each conference competing in a single-elimination bracket.

Betting On The XFL Vs. The NFL

There are several significant rule changes when we compare the XFL to the NFL. The game is still football, but there many notable rule changes that make the league considerably different from a gameplay and scoring standpoint.

Touchdowns, No Extra Points

There is no extra-point or point after attempt in the XFL.

Instead, the XFL will offer several options to teams after scoring a 6-point touchdown:

  • Convert from the 2-yard line and earn 1 point
  • Convert from the 5-yard line and earn 2 points
  • Convert from the 10-yard line and earn 3 points.

Like the NFL, teams can also return conversion attempts to the opposing end zone and receive points. For instance, an interception returned for a touchdown from the 10-yard line would be worth three points.

The Double Forward Pass

Relax, you won’t be able to keep throwing the ball forward throughout the play. However, this does open up more opportunities for trick plays on offense.

The big caveat to the Double Forward Pass rule is that forward passes are only allowed if you’re behind the line of scrimmage. This is so the game doesn’t become a circus.

This rule will add a new element to the game and more trick plays, but won’t fundamentally alter football offenses.

Special Teams Differences

One play where players often get injured is during kickoffs and punt returns. The XFL has tweaked kickoffs and punt returns in an effort to combat this, while the NFL has not made changes.

XFL Kickoff Rules:
  • The team kicking off will line up on the 35-yard line.
  • The team returning the ball will line up on the 30-yard line.
  • Once the returner catches the ball or it is on the ground for three seconds, both the return and coverage teams can begin moving and engage each other.
Crucial Change To Punts:

When it comes to punts, there is another crucial change:

  • If the ball flies out of bounds on a punt return, the ball will get placed at the 35-yard line.

There will be no more coffin corner punts.

XFL Overtime

Another area that is quite different in the XFL is overtime.

XFL games cannot end in a draw, and instead of a regulation format with kickoffs and punts, the league has gone with a shootout-type of overtime, similar to hockey or soccer.

There will be a five-round shootout of two-point conversions. Whichever team gets the most conversions will win the game. In the event of a tie after five-rounds, it will be sudden death until a winner emerges.

Other Officiating And Gameplay Differences In XFL

  • The play clock is only 25 seconds compared to the NFL’s 40-second play clock.
  • The game clock will stop temporarily after every play inside two minutes.
  • The game clock won’t stop for incompletions or when a player runs out of bounds in the final two minutes.
  • Like college football, players will only need single foot inbound as opposed to two feet in the NFL.
  • The halftime is slightly shorter than the NFL, at a strict 10-minutes, compared to the NFL’s 12-minute halftimes.
  • An official whose sole role is to spot the ball after the play concludes. The hope here is that this will speed up the game.

Strategies And Tips For Betting On XFL Games

The league is extremely new, so we don’t have a full strategy for betting on the XFL compared to the NFL. Yes, there was a single XFL season, but that was over 15 years ago, and the league and rules have changed a lot since that time.

So, bear with us we recommend some strategies for wagering on XFL betting lines. Of course, we will provide updates on some updates as we learn more. However, many betting tips for NFL football will apply for XFL football, as well.

Unless You’re An Expert, Start Slow

Unless you’re sure of your edge, you shouldn’t be wagering near the amount on XFL betting odds that you do on NFL games (provided you’re a winning NFL bettor). As mentioned above, limits will likely be low at most sportsbooks, like other small market sports.

Even if you’re sure that oddsmakers may not be handicapping these games correctly (which is possible, albeit, unlikely) give it a few weeks before upping your bets. How coaches decide to attack the point-after attempts may be a critical part of figuring out key numbers when betting the XFL.

Analyze Each Team’s Rosters And Coaches

The names you see on XFL rosters will be familiar to you as an NFL fan. Many have previously played in the NFL, and most of the coaches also have previous experience in college or professional football.

Relationships between coaches and players that have played together before are also something to consider. Things may start to “click” a little faster with their previous experience together.

Overall, look at the rosters of each team and try to learn the player style of the coaches. There are only eight teams in the league for the first season, so it’s a lot less work than breaking down 32 NFL teams.

Unders May Have Value Early On

In our expert opinion, the under may have some value when it comes to XFL betting markets, at least at first. The league wants a faster-paced game, but I am not sure that it directly translates to more scoring.

Coaches will have one less time out per half, which is significant in how they might attack two-minute drills or their offensive strategies before the half. We could see teams act more timidly before the half, which would decrease scoring.

The game clock will stop temporarily after each play inside two minutes, but won’t freeze on an incomplete pass or when a player runs out of bounds. This should also keep the clock moving.

Finally, NFL coaches, as a whole, make a ton of poor decisions. Clock management and 4th down decision making continue to plague the league. I doubt XFL coaches will be much better.

Check Out Bonuses And Promotions

Sportsbooks may offer promotions for the start of the XFL season. Though the league is new and a far inferior level of talent compared to the NFL – it’s still football. Some sportsbooks may offer promos or bonuses for XFL sports betting.

Even if they don’t site, betting sites offer bonuses and promotions to new players that sign up and deposit with real money. Also, even if you’re an experienced sports bettor with accounts at many different online sportsbooks, chances are there are still bonus opportunities available for you.

XFL Playoffs And Championship Betting

The XFL football league will have postseason games after the season concludes on Sunday, April 12th. The XFL playoffs will begin on Saturday and Sunday of the next weekend, April 18th and April 20th.

The two teams to make the playoffs from each division will have the best regular-season records. The winners of the Eastern and Western division finals will face off in the XFL Championship game, which will be held on April 26th and broadcast on ESPN.
