Best Starting Hands in Texas Hold ’em
One of the keys to winning at online Texas Hold ’em real money is understanding the value of starting hands.
Choosing whether to continue with a hand comes with a number of steps, such as the value of the hand, the number of players in the pot, the strength of your opponents, and most importantly, your position.
To get started, it’s best to learn the basics when it comes to Texas Hold ’em starting hands.
A pocket pair is two cards of a different suit in the same hand. For instance, the best possible hand in Texas Hold ’em is pocket aces or AA.
Pocket pairs such as AA, KK, QQ, JJ, and TT are elite starting hands and should be raised preflop. Pocket pairs lose value as they become lower, such as 99, 88, and so on.
However, pocket pairs are always worth playing without any substantial raises preflop, even 22.
Suited High Cards
Suited high cards such as AKs or AQs have more value than most pocket pairs and are regarded as some of the best hands in Poker. Down to about ace-ten suited, these cards are playable from almost every starting position in Poker.
Ace-king suited is an elite starting hand, winning nearly 44% of the time against pocket Queens and dominating every other player with high cards, such as AQ, AJ, AT, etc.
These are cards that derive value from being of the same suit and offering the possibility of a flush. Of course, high-suited cards are also suited connected.
Other suited connected outside of A, J, Q, T, and K that have value are nine-ten suited and seven-eight suited. Any suited connected could make a case for being played if the pot is big enough, and entry is cheap.
Non-Suited High Cards And Connectors
These are hands like AK offsuit (AKo) or AQo and four-five offsuite and so on. These cards are of different suits, so there is no possibility of a flush happening, but they can still have some high card and “connectedness” value.
You will need to be a little tighter with your range or the number of hands you play when playing non-suited high cards and connectors. From the early position, in a full ring game, 8-10 players, while in a shorthanded game, can be raised in most positions.
These are hands with no real value other than having an ace or king in the hand. These hands are unsuited and not connected. Hands like K8o, A7o, and many other variations.
You will fold these hands in most games, but they can be played from many positions in short-headed Poker. In heads up, these hands still have a lot of value.
Most Popular Texas Hold ’em Variations
There are several different variations of Texas Hold ’em. Over many years, the game has evolved to include full ring, shorthanded, heads up formats with various rules that involve tournaments and cash games.
No-Limit Texas Hold’em
The most popular Texas Hold ’em variation is easily No-Limit Texas Hold ’em. The game has made Poker famous worldwide and is responsible for the internet poker boom of the early 2000s.
The “no-limit” part refers to the bet sizing and rules of the game. In No-Limit Texas Hold ’em, you can literally bet without a limit. If you have enough chips in your stack, you can bet that amount.
That means going “all in.”
Pot-Limit Texas Hold ’em
Pot-limit Texas Hold ’em is just as it sounds. Betting rounds are defined by the size of the pot or the number of chips in the center of the table.
Betting limits are tied to the size of the pot, with each player able to bet the “pot-limit” or less during each turn and betting round.
Limit Texas Hold ’em
Limit Hold ’em is the second most popular form of Hold ’em behind No-Limit Texas Hold ’em. There are set betting limits in Hold ’em, and players do not have the opportunity to “go all-in” or bet more than the allowed amount per betting round.
Limit Texas Hold ’em games range from about $3/$6 limit to $300/$600 or even more significant stakes.
The first number represents the amount you can bet preflop and on the flop, and the second number, the turn, and the river.
Spread-limit Hold ’em
Spread-limit Hold ’em is a hybrid of Limit Hold ’em and No-Limit Hold ’em and is used in many cases in beginner’s circles to learn the game before transitioning into No-Limit Hold ’em.
Spread-limit hold’em is essentially No-Limit Hold ’em, but with limits.
The spread limits do not charge during each street. For example, if it’s a $2-10 spread limit game, these limits would be for the entire hand, for all streets.
Many cardrooms get around local regulations or restrictions by offering massive spread limit games, such as $2-$2,000, which depending on the stakes, essentially makes the game close to No-Limit.
Free Poker vs. Real Money Texas Hold ‘Em Poker
I always recommend players start out playing for Texas Hold ’em for free or with play money before moving into real money Texas Hold ’em online.
If you start out with play money, not only are you able to learn the game without risking your real money (at least to start), but you will also be able to get a handle on the software and what games or variations you like.
After you familiarize yourself with the software and rules of the game, then it’s time to move on to real money play. Ultimately, playing for free or for fun is an excellent way to learn the game until you graduate to real money play.
BetUS gives players the option to “play for fun”, which is essentially an option to play online poker for free.
Real Money Texas Hold ’em Apps
There are many excellent options when it comes to playing Hold ’em on your mobile phone. However, many third-party apps lack the elite-level software that trusted real money online poker sites feature.
Players will have a much more robust experience playing online poker if they stick with a trusted operator.
Their software and web pages are optimized for mobile play and are the golden standard in the industry.
