Betting On Golf Guide

Golf betting has become mainstream. The glory years of Tiger Woods are almost gone, but there are many outstanding young stars, such as Rory Mcllroy and Jordan Spieth, that will keep the game interesting for years to come.

Golf betting won’t give you the constant daily action that is available with other sports, but the PGA Tour has events all year round, with little layoff between seasons.

Our online sports betting guide to golf will offer bettors golf betting tips, the best golf betting sites, and much more.

There is increasingly more betting handle on Golf events, such as the Masters and British Open, along with an expansion of markets with more golf props and futures than ever before.

Golf Betting Strategies

Those that aren’t into golf see it as simple as “get the ball into the hole”, but the number of variables that golfers must consider when attacking each hole is massive.

We offer you a few golf betting strategies that should help you make smarter wagers.

Betting Tip #1Knowledge is Power

Understanding each golfer’s game and what type of terrain they excel at will go a long way in pointing you in the right direction regarding betting odds.

Historically, many golfers will perform better at specific courses and under certain weather conditions.

Betting Tip #2Current Form

The form is less important or doesn’t matter as much for the big guns of the game. Take into consideration how the lesser-known golfers are playing recently when looking at future performance.

If you can identify a top golfer before making it the leap to superstar, you will likely have some winnings in your pocket as a golf bettor.

Betting Tip #3Looking at the Golf Course

The golf course is of paramount importance to the betting line. The difficulty of the course may be an advantage for some and a disadvantage for others. Ask yourself several questions when looking at the course:

  • Are sand traps a significant factor on the course?
  • How high is the par compared to other courses?

You will need to combine the golf course research with the next point, the golfers ,and their skill.

Betting Tip #4Get to Know the Golfers

Individual study of the players is vital to making smart bets. Everyone knows the strengths and weaknesses of the famous golfers, like Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, and Dustin Johnson.

However, it’s the up-and-coming golfers where you make the extra money when betting on golf. PGATour.com offers player profiles of the game’s best. Be sure to do your research on all the golfers playing in the tournaments if you want to succeed handicapping the PGA Tour.

Combining the Information for Smarter Golf Bets

It is essential to not only look at how well a golfer has played lately, but also how well they perform on specific golf courses. This combination will undoubtedly get you to the best golf bets possible.

Betting Tip #5Wind and Weather

The weather conditions will have a significant impact on the course. The wind is especially important, as if winds get high enough, it can completely alter the trajectory of the ball.

Wet grass may also be a factor. General temperatures also play a part. Like baseball, golf balls do go farther in hotter weather compared to colder weather.

Bet On The Masters Golf Tournament

Betting on the masters golf tournament

The event takes place every year in April at the Augusta National Golf Club. The winner of the Masters each year receives the coveted “Green Jacket”.

The prize pool is one of the largest in professional golf. The purse was $11,5 million in 2019and is set to rise in future tournaments.

Previous Masters Winner: In 2019, Tiger Woods won took home the trophy and over $2 million in prize money.

Betting Odds And The Masters

All the top professional golfers play in the Masters, making it a great tournament to bet on golf. The odds selection for large tournaments are much better than smaller events on the Tour.

PGA Championship Betting

Betting on the PGA

The PGA Championship is another annual golfing event. It takes place at a different golf course every year, which forces bettors to do plenty of research on the golfers and the course.

It would be wise to read our golf betting tips before making any wagers on the PGA Championship.

Previous PGA Winner: Brooks Koepka won the 2019 PGA Tour Championship. He took home $1.9 million in prize money with the victory.

Betting on the U.S. Open

Betting on the US Open

The U.S. Open is held annually in June of each year and usually draws large crowds due to the excellent weather at the start of summer.

Like the PGA Championship, it takes place at a different course each year. Researching the course and current form of players is just as vital here.

The U.S. Open is another premier tournament. It doesn’t have the betting handle of the Masters, but it is close in many years.

Previous U.S. Open Winner: Gary Woodland won the 2019 US Open at Pebble Beach. It was his first major title.

British Open – A Global Betting Opportunity

Betting on the British Open

Betting on the British Open garners more wagers than any other PGA Tour event because of its broader global interest.

Americans and Europeans are both widely interested in the event.

There are more golfers on the course during the British Open, making it a prime golf tournament to bet on. The British Open is held in July and the course changes each year.

Previous British Open Winner: Shane Lowry won the 2019 British Open title, taking home $1,935,000.

Popular Golf Bets You Can Place

Unlike football or basketball betting, there are no point spreads in golf.

Some props offer head-to-head matchups between golfers where there is a “spread” on the number of strokes, but for the most part, you will be betting outrights, futures, and props.

Outright Tournament Winners

Golf Tournament Winners

Betting which golfer will win a tournament is the most common golf wager available and the most common wager most golf bettors place.

At most betting sites, the odds will be listed in moneyline format.

Such as, “Sergio Garcia +900” or “Francesco Molinari +500” to win the Italian Open. Some sportsbooks will allow you to bet take the field against a particular golfer, as well.

There are no spreads or special requirements when betting on outrights or a golfer to win a tournament. If the golfer you bet on wins the tournament, you win your bet. If they don’t, your wager is graded as a loss.

Golf Futures Bets

Golf Future Bets

Golf futures can be similar to outrights, but focus on majors won rather than select odds for each tournament.

You might be able to bet on the number of majors a golfer might win or if they will win a major at all.

These used to be available just for top golfers, but futures have expanded quite a bit in recent years.

Bets of this type are usually “action.” This means that if for whatever reason your golfer doesn’t participate in an event or fails to qualify – your wager will be graded as a loss.

3-Ball Golf Betting

3 Ball Golf Betting

3-ball golf betting is a popular option at the best golf betting sites. It’s offered on the 1st and 2nd rounds of a traditional four-round golf tournament.

When betting a 3-ball wager, you must choose which player in a three-player group will post the lowest score (or best) in the round.

Typically, all bets stand once the players have teed off. If there is a tie between two golfers, the payout amount is reduced. For a tie between two golfers, the number is half the normal payout. Between three golfers it is a third of the normal payout.

2-Ball Golf Betting

2 Ball Golf Betting

2-ball golf betting is basically the same as 3-ball betting but involves just two golfers instead of three. Essentially, it’s a head-to-head matchup.

Bettors still need to pick the golfer that will have the lowest score in the round.

Like 3-ball betting, there will be a reduced payout when there is a tie.

Golf Prop Bets

Golf Prop Bets

Golf offers a unique opportunity for those looking to place golf prop bets.

Many bettors don’t realize there are plenty of proposition bets for golf.

You can bet whether a player will make a birdie, an eagle, or even a hole-in-one are available to you.

Golf Live Betting

Live betting on golf

Yes, there is even live betting on PGA tour events. It is not offered by all sportsbooks and sometimes markets are limited, but most betting sites at least have live betting on outrights (who will win the tournament).

Betting on individual holes or live betting 3-balls is also available at some sportsbooks. Live betting golf can be extremely profitable.
